Wife of Abdul-Aziz al-Khayir says Russia responsible for husband abduction

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Fadwa Mahmoud, wife of the veteran opposition figure Abdul Aziz al-Khayir who was abaducted with two fellows four years ago by regime security, said Husband's abduction was due to not having a consensual Alwaite figure in Syria.

Fadwa Mahmoud explained the details of her husband’s detention as well as her son Maher, from ex-husband Abdul Razaq al-Tahan, and
Iyas Abdul Ghani Ayash, member of Coordination Committee for Democratic Change (NCC) .

Abdul Aziz al-Khayir and Iyas Ayash were detained after they came from China where they were representing Coordination Committee in one of the visits. It was decided to held the National Rescue Conference which NCC called for following their visit on 23rd of September 2012.

The NCC were concerned of convening the conference in Damascus so Russia, Iran, and China guaranteed the participants will not be harmed, Mahmoud told Zaman al-Wasl.

“When Abdul Aziz came from the China, they detained him with his colleague from the airport. They also detained my ex-husband Maher al-Tahan who was receiving them at the airport.

The conference was held and attended by the Russian Ambassador to Damascus. I was also there and I said to the ambassador that he is responsible for the detention of Abdul Aziz, Maher and Ilyas.

He responded that they are working to release him, but regime Minister of Media Omran al-Zoubi said the three are not detained by regime security, but by Islamist groups who kidnapped them. I went to the Russian Embassy and met with the Russian Ambassador and he said he shares my worries,” she added.

Regarding the reason of Abdul Aziz detention, she said, “the regime does not believe in a peaceful political solution. Abdul Aziz believes in one.

"I do not rule out that he was detained so he would not be a powerful consensual Alwaite figure that might draw many from Alwaite sect to a political solution. The regime might have tried to compromise with Abdul Aziz to change his stand and that’s why they probably did not release him.”

Fadwa Mahmoud was detained in the 90s and she confirmed she will hold al-Khayir’s beliefs no matter what the price is. She moved to Lebanon and stayed there for 3 years when Lebanese Intelligence stormed her house so she had to leave to Germany.

NCC is a Syrian bloc consisting of 13 left political parties and other independent members. Reuters defined the body as the main internal opposition group.
