Without regime umbrella, Syrian athletes participate in Open European Championship for Karate

(Zaman Al Wasl)- The Syrian sport has brought back to the headlines again after the World Karate Federation has agreed on the participation of the Free Syrian team, group of athletes who defected Syrian regime, in the Open European Championship.

The sport event  will take place next Saturday in Luxembourg with a wide participation of international athletes of different age groups, participants tol d Zaman al-Wasl..

The Syrian delegation, which is under the umbrella of the General Committee for Sports and Youth with funding from “the Syrian Regional Program,” will arrive in Luxembourg on Friday morning.

The delegation is composed of: the coach Imad Zein al-Abedin who acts as the head of the delegation and each of the following athletes: Ali al-Baroudi, Ahmad Branaji, Amar Ayub, Hassam Kanbz, Nour Shanan.

The national coach, Imad Zein al-‘Abedin, spoke in a special meeting with Zaman al-Wasl about the championship saying: “The competitions are held according to the schedule of the World Karate Federation in cooperation with the European and Asian federations which gives it an international shade and makes it very strong especially as over 800 athletes, including some who hold first position on a global level, will compete.”

Zein al-Abedin confirms the importance of the Championship for the Free Syrian athletes based on the interaction, experience and development of international ties the will enable them to participate in many other future champions under the banner of the Free Syrian flag. He indicated the difficulty in winning colored medals during the championship.

From his side, the Olympic champion Ali al-Baroudi highlighted the high level of the European athletes participating in the competition as most of them hold an advanced rank in the registers of the World Karate Federation.

Al-Baroudi speaking to Zaman al-Wasl added: “Our mere participation as a team representing the revolution is a challenge and a big achievement given the obstacles our free sport is facing from dispersion to the international community’s unwillingness to acknowledge the revolutionary sport institutions. We seek for our participation to extend beyond just representing Syria’s free to achieving advanced positions and sparkling medals.”

The Open European Championships for karate is the first official participation for the Free Syrian team after series of unofficial participations, the most important of which was the World Cup held in Athens, the World Shotokan Championship, and the Athens Open Championship for Karate.

Ahmad Sharm, the head of the office for individual sports in the General Committee for Sports and Youth, clarified for Zaman al-Wasl, that necessity of transferring the image and sound of the revolution to the world by raising the independence flag in international sporting celebrations, and dismantling the thug like behavior and nepotism practiced by the regime’s sports federations.

Sharm believes such participation will raise the moral of free athletes inside Syria and push youths and children to persevere in their training and not give up in the face of the regime’s crimes and violations against Syrians.

The international championship will take place from the 22-24 of this month, and our free champions will compete in the free weight class, advanced Kata, and Kata for men over the age of 18.
