PYD, regime NDF Militia clash in Qamishli, 7 U.N. employees trapped

(Zaman Al Wasl)- A fierce fighting erupted Thursday between Kurdish PYD militia and regime's paramilitary wing the National Defense Forces in northern Qamishli city, activists and a monitor said.

Despite regime's aerial bombing on Kurdish areas, a senior official from Damascus has arrived in Qamishli to put an end to the clashes between PYD and National Defense, sources told Zaman al-Wasl.

Activist Mahmoud al-Ahmad confirmed eruption of clashes again between PYD fighters and the militia after an artillery shell from 154 military troop fell south of the city and killed a number of PYD fighters and a civilian and injured others.

Al-Ahmad said the PYD fighters raided ‘Alaaya Prison east of Qamishli on Wednesday, killed the prison administrative manager along some personnel and besieged the rest in the building. Several National Defense personnel and regime police surrendered to PYD.

Meanwhile, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for human Rights said seven U.N. employees had been trapped in Qamishli.

PYD is trying to capture National Defense strongholds like the Central Prison and Baath Bakery in Qamishli which are already under its control, al-Ahmad added.

National Defense Militia wrote on its Facebook page, “the Arab Syrian Army did not intervene so far, and if the army intervenes, the situation will be resolved in the province. The Central Prison is under our control and other information saying otherwise is incorrect.”

Also, clashes erupted between Kurdish Asayish Militia and National Defense on Wednesday in the center of Qamishli before it extends to ‘Alaaya Priosn where prison assistant director Jalal was killed and another regime police.

Similar clashes had erupted between National Defense and PYD late January when a group from the militia raided a PYD location and stepped on Ocalan photos.

Syrian Defense Minister Fahid al-Faraj and National Security Officer Ali Mamluk had mediated to resolve the conflict. It ended by PYD taking control over the northern part of the city.
