Security chaos turned rebels' main concern as assassinations mount

(Zaman Al Wasl)- When Syria's uprising erupted 5 years ago with a peaceful demonstrations to topple Bashar Assad, Syrians- suddenly- found themselves trapped as crackdown was surrounding them everywhere.

Death toll was rising and no concrete efforts made by the International community to stop the carnage.

At the time, the armed resistance had become a survival need. Such a need that had been has dragged the Syria to high level of violence and extremism that was fed by the Assad allies and jihadi movements in the region.

The armed resistance or local rebels who took vast swaths in Syria were not able to impose full order and provide security due to a complex body of factors internal and external.

Although rebel factions founded civil police and courts in the liberated regions to counter chaos and insecurity to establish a new order; it failed to do so. The rebel factions instead took sides in conflicts in which prominent opposition leaders were assassinated along with local Syrians. Weapons use is widely spread and normalized as well as assassinations and car bombs.

In addition to rebels being a fuel for a proxy war and agents working for unknown agendas. These all became the biggest challenge to the success of the revolution and a reason for population frustration in a new order different from that of Assad’s.

-Series of Assassinations-

On 9 September 2014, a car bomb killed more than 50 fighters in Ahrar ash-Sham Brigade during a meeting in Idlib countryside. The general leader of the brigade Hasan Aboud was killed. Imad Tabak was the military leader of the “First Coastal Brigade” was assassinated last Wednesday in Idlib’s countryside. Udai Ahmad al-Rahman, leader of al-Batar Brigade, part of al-Azat group subordinate to the Free Syrian Army (FSA) operating in Khan Shaykhoun. The major Bassam Abdul Razaq, legal official for Bayan Movement in Idlib countryside was assassinated in July 2015. Leader in Ahrar ash-Sham Abdul Qader al-Dab’aan was assassinated in Jarjanaz in Idlib in January 2015.

Other assassinations include; leaderof Shuhada al-Khalidiye, Abu Wael al-Homsi in December 2014, leader of Ahrar ash-Sham Abu Ratib al-Homsi in Farhaniye village in Homs countryside in January, the military leader for Ahel al-Sunnah Brigade Basel Bardan in Daraa countryside on 1 April, the field leader of Magaweer Hawran Abu Ali al-Aboud in Jeeze town, the field leader in Iman brigades Kamal al-Hamwi in April 2015, chief of Dar al-Adel court Usama al-Yateem in Hawran in December, leader in Shabab al-Sunnah Zuhair al-Zoubi in November 2015, leader of Ahrar al-Sanameen Faction Abu Ibrahim al-Sanameeni in Daraa countryside, leader in Azem Movement Omar Musa in October 2014, and many other assassinations.

-Assassinations Methods-

The assassinations are done by sleeper cells in different ways; shooting, explosives- which need planning and infiltrations to execute via intelligence and logistical support-, car bombs, and booby-trapped motorcycles.

Some assassinations are executed by international players and these are the most dangerous. The recent one was the assassination of Jaish al-Islam Leader Zahran Allush when a Russian aircraft shelled a meeting of prominent officials in the brigade in East Ghouta in Damascus Countryside in 2015. Sources revealed Jordan involvement in passing intelligence to the Russian of the brigade meeting location.

-Need for Unified Body-

Brigadier General Shawqi Ayoub in the armed factions in northern Homs countryside told Zaman al-Wasl, there is no chaos and insecurity in the general terms since we do not have official authorities. The assassination is a revolution specification there are transgressions by rebel factions and many regime spies and reporters in liberated regions. The General called for a unified rebel military body with its judicial, logistical, and security apparatuses to impose security, work and mutual coordination between factions.

Strategic and military analyst Faiz al-Asmar said the insecurity in liberated regions is due to widespread weaponry which facilitates infiltrations. Also, agents and spies are recruited in rebel factions and there is a lack of confidentiality for mobility of rebels and their work and that facilities easy transfer of information.

On the other hand, researcher and activist Ali Qasum confirmed it is very natural to have chaos in absence of real cooperation and coordination among rebel factions due to the different donors and loyalties. It is very easy for any group to drive a car and raise a flag of any rebel factions to pass through rebel checkpoints; hence, there is a necessity and urgency to form a unified political, security, and military body to unify all rebel factions.

Recently, the rebels discovered several groups specialized in explosives and mines in Idlib countryside and Daraa countryside. It should be noted these groups belong to a rebel faction. Other activists pointed out that most of the assassinations are done by regime agents and Isis agents.
