(Zaman al-Wasl)- The free Syrian team for swimming garnered a silver medal in the Qatar International swimming championship for open water in Doha on Friday.

The international athlete, Anas Mahmoud, won the silver medal in the 1500-meter competition after achieving a time of 3 minutes and 22 seconds.

The champion Anas Mahmoud said to Zaman al-Wasl, “The competition was very tough, 200 swimmers participated and faced high waves which made my task of achieving a gold difficult, so I am contented with the silver medal which I dedicate firstly to the martyrs of Aleppo and to my colleagues amongst the free athletes inside the great city.”

In solidarity with free Syrians’ campaign “# Aleppo is burning” which came as a response to the massacres committed by the regime and Russian air forces against civilians, Mahmoud refused to celebrate winning the silver medal expressing his deep sorrow about the situation Syrians are living from killing and harassment in light of international silence according to him.

Mahmoud continued, “In light of what happened to Aleppo from the hysterical bombing that led to the loss of tens of innocent lives and caused hundreds of injuries, the achievements today in the Qatari capital came without any joy even though it was colored by the Syrian revolutionary flag.”

The Syrian delegate team for free swimming were represented in the championship by three swimmers Anas Mahmoud, Ahmad al-Iqdeh, and Anad al-Najjar under the supervision of the Syrian Union for Swimming and Water Sports that is subordinate to the Committee for Sports and Youths.

Muyaser Mahmoud, the secretary of the Syrian Union for Swimming, spoke to Zaman al-Wasl about the great efforts exercised by the union since its establishment to ensure the participation of Syrian athletes in international championship such as the Qatar International Championship despite the lack of funding for free sports.

Myuaser indicated the importance and need to ensure the financial support for athletes with the aim of representing free Syrian sport in international forums due to the dramatic effect it has on international opinion regarding communicating the reality of what is happening in Syria.

It must be indicated that the General Committee for Sports and Youths represented by its unions and executive committees decided to halt its sports activities inside and outside Syria until further notice in solidarity with the victims in the city of Aleppo.
