Army of Conquest to reunite as Aleppo attacks continue

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Once Syria's powerful rebel alliance, the Army of Conquest, is due to reunite after months of discord and rifts, pushed by the regime's major offensive on northern province of Aleppo, senior rebel commander said Monday.

The alliance that was formed in March 2015, and took vast swaths in north Syrian including most of Idlib province, has been revived after intense efforts by clerics and leading jihadist to halt regime's atrocities in Aleppo and Coastal areas, Abu Yazeed al-Taftanazi said.

About 300 people have been killed in regime and Russia's aerial campaign on Aleppo that has reduced Syria's second city to rubble.

Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Monday talks with Russia and coalition partners were "getting closer to a place of understanding" on renewing a ceasefire in Syria, including Aleppo.

"We're getting closer to a place of understanding, but we have some work to do, and that's why we're here," Kerry said at the start of a meeting with Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir in Geneva.

Jubeir condemned the escalation of fighting as a "violation of all humanitarian laws", blaming the air strikes in Aleppo on government forces and called for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down. "He can leave through a political process, which we hope he will do, or he will be removed by force," Jubeir said.

In his turn, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is to host U.N. envoy Staffan de Mistura for talks on Syria in Moscow Tuesday, the foreign ministry said.

"Talks between Mistura and Sergei Lavrov followed by a press conference will take place" in Moscow, spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told AFP Monday. (With agencies)
