Blaze engulfs new old market in Damascus

Translation by Rana Abdul

(Eqtsad)- A new fire broke out late on Thursday in al-Manakhliye market in the Old City of Damascus, a week since blaze had engulfed a historic market nearby, residents say.

The arson of al-Manakhliye was similar to Asruniyeh fire. The damage is unclear amid noticeable silence by regime-run media outlets.

The source told Zaman al-Wasl the place where the fire erupted is an archeological site and it is an extension of al-Malek Faisal Street (King Faisal Street) in Damascus.

Pro-regime media pages mentioned the news of the fire saying it happened in al-Amaraa neighborhood and did not mention al-Manakhliye market.

Al-Amaraa neighborhood is adjacent to al-Manakhliye, which means the news of pro-regime media is either confused or intended deliberately not to bring attention to a fire which targeted another archeological market in old Damascus in less than a month after the huge fire in al-Asruniyeh.

“Diary of a Mortar Shell” Facebook page said the fire erupted in al-Amaraa neighborhood behind al-Adaas mosque opposite of police station. They added that firemen are working to put out the fire.

Pro-regime Facebook page “Damascus now” published a photo of the fire saying it erupted in a wooden shop in al-Amaraa neighborhood in Damascus and caused only material damage.

Many social media users commented on the news post of Damascus now saying it is a conspiracy against Damascus and a scheme to empty the city of its original population pointing to Assad regime and Iran.

Eqtsad published a detailed report including leaked data confirming al-Asruniyeh fire few weeks ago was deliberate and shopkeepers were pressured to sell their shops and businessman Mohamed Hamshou was facilitating the process.

Al-Manakhliye market in old Damascus still keeps its form and is considered a touristic site inside the wall of Damascus. The date of the market goes back to more than 1800 years.
