Opposition interim govt candidate withdraws over law violation

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Dr. Thaer Saleh al-Taweel has withdrawn from the opposition's interim government candidacy due to violation of the National Coalition laws in enhancing opportunities for some candidates over others hours before election of new president.

The general committee of the coalition will meet on Monday to elect a new president of the Interim Government and discuss other topics on agenda.

Aal-Taweel released a statement saying, “the coalition made up their decision of choosing the new president even before the nominations and voting. This is contradictory to democratic process and denies giving opportunity as well as choosing the appropriate program which meets Syrian population aspirations.”

The statement talked about the inequality of opportunity between candidates from coalition members and ministers since they know the financial and human resources available while others did not have this advantage.

Thaer al-Taweel told Zaman al-Wasl the coalition explicitly violated the general code of the coalition by accepting its member as a candidate for presidency of the government. The general code says, representatives in the coalition cannot assume senior posts like ministers of higher in the interim government.

Al-Taweel added that the nomination and voting process was not fair. They gave the 6 candidates half an hour to present themselves and their program in front of the coalition general committee. This time does not equal the amount and level of the post and is not enough for choosing a candidate for a normal job.

Al-Taweel described himself as a Technocrat candidate clarifying he had prepared a comprehensive program with specialists to run the government and get the funding to facilitate its success. He was always insistent of working from inside of Syria to serve populations inside and giving displaced outside also necessary care.

The coalition have opened nomination for interim government presidency and the period of nomination ended on 11 May. 6 candidates applied including two ministers from the former government and a current member in the coalition.
