PYD, regime militarise Hasaka to fight ISIS, U.S, Russia ignore forcible conscription

Translation by Yusra Ahmed

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Forcible conscription of youth is continuing in the province of Hasaka, as the regime is forcing all employees to run military training sessions to recruit them later in the army, while the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) and Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) arrest young men at their barriers and recruit for fighting by their side.

Activist Rasid al-Janoubi from the city of al-Shadadi reported that barriers of Syrian Democratic Forces are arresting youth under 30 years of age at their barriers in the city of Hasaka, while forces called “military police” chase them in the Eastern and Western countryside to recruit them in the big anticipated battle against the Islamic State (ISIS).

The activist added that every young man who does not have an official postpone of mandatory military service from the recruiting administration of the Syrian government in Hasaka is subject for arresting if he is in the range of required age. On the other hand, there are many young men voluntarily joined battalions of PYD, fearing of arrest or to find financial support amid lack of job opportunity.

Media of the PYD announced that 225 Arabic young men have joined Syrian Democratic Forces after running a training session for 45 days.

The Syrian regime forces on the other hand announced the graduation of a new group of militia of Self Defense, as 300 employees from health sector and other who work in teaching sector were forced to join this session on condition of being dismissed from job if they refuse to join. the Governor of Hasaka, responsible for organising theses session had three months ago issue an order in this regard according to activist Abdulla Mohammed.

The activist detailed that regime’s training sessions excluded the Kurds, according to an agreement between the regime and PYD. The session lasted one or two weeks after that attendees were sent to regime’s security check points and barriers in Hasaka and Qamishli and surrounding areas.

The Syrian regime is trying to “militarize” the whole community in Hasaka by pressurising employees and threatening them of dismissal according to the activist, as no house in the province does not have a man recruited with the Syrian regime army or their ally “PYD” which controls the majority of the province.

The regime and PYD tended to adopt the policy of mandatory recruitment to cover the shortage of fighters in their forces compared to the wide area of fronts with the Islamic State which cover areas between al-Furat river, Aleppo countryside and the Iraqi borders to East south of Hasaka, beside their agreement to avoid recruiting men of the Arab tribes and the National Defense forces and al-Baath battalions.

The Democratic union party (PYD) is the only military formation apart from the Syrian regime that forcibly recruit men to fight by its side, that action is being ignored and not criticised because of the U.S , Russia an the Syrian regime support under claims of fighting the Islamic State which is the priority for them.

Hasaka province is controlled by three main powers, the majority of the province is controlled by the military arms of the PYD, while the regime controls the security squares and military camps and bases and dozens of villages. The Islamic State controls the town of Markada in the far south of the province.
