Aleppo's local council implants open areas over siege concerns

(Eqtsad)- Local Council in the rebel-held Aleppo city has planted some open areas in the war-torn neighborhoods with vegetables and legumes in a proactive measure for upcoming blockade due to battles on many fronts in the city as well as the Kurdish fighters observance of Castillou road, the only gateway connecting Aleppo with its countryside.

Agriculture official in the Aleppo Local Council in an exclusive statement to Zaman al-Wasl said that the idea of the project stems from fear of blockade of Aleppo city due to the fierce attack on the northern countryside. The agriculture office and gardening in the council adopted the project of planting small open areas and balconies.

Al-Khalaf said the objective of the project is to help families to rid off blockade ghost and provide jobs for the unemployed. It will help to get away from food baskets which are described by families as “humiliation baskets”. Also, it will improve the environmental conditions in the city by increasing oxygen and decreasing Cos emission.

Regarding the implementation of the project, al-Khalaf said the council distributed seeds and fertilizers to a number of neighborhoods council in the city.

The council conducted seminars to promote agriculture among the population and to promote the importance of agriculture pointing out the area planted is estimated to be 3 hectares distributed on Hananou, Jabal Bodour, and al-Misraniye neighborhoods.

The crops planted include tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants, beans, lettuce, spinach, zucchinis. These provide a strategic supplies in case blockade was imposed, he added.

Local Aleppo Council planting experience resemble the one in besieged al-Waer neighborhood in Homs where population planted neighborhood gardens and rooftops to overcome the blockade imposed by the regime and pro-regime militias for more than two years.

Head of Aleppo Local Council Baryta Haji Hasan had warned in a press statement in February of upcoming blockade on Aleppo in the light of the three sides attacks by regime forces and its militias, the Kurdish fighters, and Islamic State. He indicated back then that the council plans to counter the blockade with planting open empty areas in the city by the agriculture office in the council.
