People of Saraqib protest for sugar shortage

(Zaman al-Wasl)- Tens of people went to streets in Saraqib town in Idlib province on Saturday protesting lack of some items and traders in the city monopolizing food products. The protesters cut the road connecting to the city of Idlib with burning tires, local sources reported.

According to local sources, sugar material disappeared from the markets and shops for over a week following an increase in prices in conjunction with depreciation of SP in front of American Dollar.

Free Police apparatus intervened to calm down the protesters and promised to secure sugar and other food items. A kilo of sugar reached 650 SP on average in Saraqib and its surrounding areas until Saturday, sources added.

Activists and locals in southern Idlib countryside reported that most of the shops are monopolizing small amounts of sugar to sell in high prices under pretext of increased fuel prices which led to increase of shipment prices to liberated regions inside of Syria.

Several factors affected prices increase in liberated regions in Syria. The first of which is connecting the price of the food product with American currency in addition to warplanes random bombing on cities and markets as well as cutting roads and other factors to do with fuel increased prices.
