Former Intelligence agent says regime urged him to form FSA faction

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Head of Military Intelligence Branch in Idlib province asked General Nufal al-Hussein in September 2011 to form a Free Syrian Army (FSA) brigade in Jabal al-Zaweyeh in Idlib countryside, according to Marwan Mekhbat.

Mekhbat said General Nufal told him he will be the leader of the brigade and will coordinate with the Military Security.

He added, “Nufal promised me in case I agree to form the brigade to provide me with ammunition and give up several checkpoints for the brigade to be able to make victory on the ground in order to gain some popularity that could secure more young men joining it in the area.”

However, Mekhbat evaded the mission by pointing out to deputy head of the Military Intelligence branch he is not accepted by his people since he was a personnel in Intelligence branch. Mekhbat promised he will support the Syrian regime in the councils and with friends.

Mekhbat insists that Bashar al-Assad leads some rebel factions on the ground accusing a number of rebel leaders of working for the regime. He indicated that the situation in Maare and other areas confirm this.

Marwan Mekhbat introduces himself as an interrogator in Security branch in Beirut in Lebanon. Rustum Ghazaleh was head of the branch. Mekhbat then joined a Military Security branch in Kafarsuseh in Damascus after Syrian army exit of Lebanon to be released from service in 2007 by help from Ghazaleh. He remained in contact with Ghazaleh until 2011 by visits to his office in Damascus. (Translation by Rana Abdul)
