Despite bombing, displaced Syrians organize sport activities

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Free Education Directorate in Latakia countryside started a football league in Bidama on a playground prepared fast for displaced young men and school students to participate, activists said.

“The shelling with cluster bombs and Assad and Russian missiles permitted them to control points in the field, but these will not let them defeat our love for life and will for freedom,” Ahmad Yamani, Head of Education Directorate in Latakia said.

Ahmad told Zaman al-Wasl,” our young men live in constant military pressure and stress and fear of shelling which reached the Turkish borders. Most of the participants in the league are school students who need a break after a difficult school year due to repeated displacement.”



Regarding the preparations, Ahmad added that the directorate established the league in a non-populated and non-targeted valley using a bulldozer from one of rebel factions to pave the playground and using wood to make the goals.

Ahmad indicated the league did not need funding, but a community organization offered clothes for some players and small financial rewards with medals for the winners. They organization offered an honorary cup, too.
Ahmad Yamani looked very happy talking about the big interest shown in the league as many came to attend the matches and many rebel factions’ representatives and civil defense as well as social actors attended the event.

Five football teams participated in the league with ages under 20 from schools, camps and nearby villages and some Free Syrian Army fighters.
