Reporting by Abdul Salam Bakri; Translation by Rana Abdul

(Zaman al-Wasl)- In a surprising manner, Syria's oil ministry withdrew the drilling and excavating machinery from al-Mashaheer neighborhood in Latakia city few days go. Conflicting reports say it was by Russian orders or it is due a despair of not finding any oil.

The excavations started the beginning of 2015 based on geological data confirming huge stock of oil and gas according to Ministry of Oil and Minerals.
Abundant oil.

One of the drilling workers told his relatives in the city that huge amounts of oil appeared in the well whose depth exceeded 1000 M. The worker questioned why the ministry withdrew the machinery and did not invest in the well which has been closed.

Pro-regime social media pages mentioned huge containers transporting oil from al-Mashaheer oil well and another oil well in Damsarkhou to Banyas refinery in December 2015 in conjunction with the big crisis the regime suffered in supplying oil to its military machinery and heating fuel.

Neither the regime media outlets nor the Ministry of Oil issued any clarification regarding the stop of oil drilling whereas pro-regime pages said the drilling machinery were transported to Palmyra city surrounding for excavations there.

Latakia city had witnessed an oil leak in al-Sinaa and Martaqlaa neighborhood in the 80s during drilling operations for building. The incident was obscured and not discussed further.

Also, oil streamed in the street adjacent to the playground when drilling for a water well to provide water for the Olympic swimming pool. The pool was prepared to host the Mediterranean championship in 1987. The well was closed by orders form the Public Palace.

Latakia residents circled news about the former president Hafez al-Assad that he issued orders to Ministry of Oil and province’s security and political officials to obscure the oil incidents in Latakia, “it is only for the sons of the Syrian coast”, they found in it a reserve to be invested later on when they want to establish a sectarian canton in the coast.

İt should be noted the Syrian regime’s Ministry of Oil released a number of studies confirming that there is a huge amount of oil under Latakia under the Syrian regional waters and it is one of the biggest gas reserves in the world.

This led observers to say that Russia intervened militarily in Syria to support the regime in exchange for signing exclusive deals to invest in the oil and gas in the coast for SNG East MED SA company. Hence, Russia forced the regime to stop the oil drilling in Latakia.

The excavation operations for oil in Latakia especially in al-Meena al-Bayda, Damsarkhou, and Basnada stopped since two months.

The Syrian regime lost control over most of the Syrian oil. Rebel factions and Islamic State and Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) control oil resources and sell it to regime in Dollars.

Iran and Iraq supplied the regime with oil for cheap prices or for free for the regime to be able to stay in power in Damascus.
