Aleppo: rebels capture T-90, most advanced Russian tank in service

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Powerful Nour el-Din al-Zinki Movement said rebels have captured T-90 tank, the most advanced Russian tank in service, in the northern countryside of Aleppo province, rebel commander said.

Rebels made gains on Thursday, taking control of al-Mallah district in the northern countryside from regime forces and killing
more than 50 soldiers, Captain Abdul Salam Abdul Razzaq, spokesman of Nour el-Din al-Zinki, told Zaman al-Wasl.

According to military websites, the T-90 is a third-generation Russian battle tank that entered service in 1993.

The T-90 uses a 125 mm 2A46 smoothbore main gun, the 1A45T fire-control system, an upgrated engine, and thermal sights. Standard protective measures include a blend of steel, composite armour, smoke dischargers, Kontakt-5 explosive-reactive armour, laser warning receivers, Nakidka camouflage and the Shtora infrared ATGM jamming system. The EMT-7 electromagnetic pulse (EMP) creator has been used in testing but not fitted to T-90s in active service. It was designed and built by Uralvagonzavod, in Nizhny Tagil, Russia.

Since 2011, the Russian armed forces have ceased any further orders for the T-90, and are instead anticipating the development of the T-14 Armata that is expected to enter service in 2016.
