ISIS fighters launch attack on SDF bastions south of Hasaka

Translation by Rana Abdul

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Clashes re-erupted between Islamic State on the one hand and US-backed Kurdish Syria Democratic Forces (SDF) and Elite Forces on the other during the past two days in the southern countryside of Hasaka Province.

Activist Malaz al-Yoused said the clashes happened in the surrounding of Abu Fas and al-Tarnabat villages in the western side of al-Shadadi south of Hasaka following an Isis offensive on SDF strongholds. The sounds of clashes were heard in all the area amid intensive flying of International Alliance warplanes over southern countryside during the past two days.

Al-Yousef told Zaman al-Wasl that groups of Isis fighters infiltrated to points controlled by Syrian Elite Forces, the military wing of al-Ghad Movement headed by Ahmad al-Jarba, the former president of the Syrian National Coalition.

The activist pointed out that Isis fighters took newly recruited fighters in the Elite Forces from the southern countryside of Hasaka.

In the same context, clashes continued between Isis and SDF alliance on the outskirts of al-Fadghami town on the eastern bank of al-Khabour River, in the area between al-Shadadi and Markada, amid International Alliance warplanes flying over the area, according to local sources.

Local sources said armed groups subordinate to PYD stormed houses in al-Houl in eastern countryside and arrested a group of young men on charges of being affiliated with Isis. They tightened surveillance on communication devices especially satellite internet.

Also, PYD patrols arrested a group of young men under the age of 30 in al-Arysha town south the city of Hasaka to recruit them in fighting in PYD ranks against Isis. The arrested group were transported to PYD camps in al-Maylabyeh Division and other sites in southern countryside.

US-backed SDF alliance captured al-Shadadi and al-Arysha towns from Isis in February backed by International Alliance warplanes in the military operation known as al-Khabour Anger in their third battle after the SDF alliance was formed by United States in October 2015 from PYD militia. Isis still controls Markada, its last stronghold in Hasaka Province.
