Syrian refugees in Austria enjoy Ramadan, feel at home

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Refugees in the countryside of Austria enjoy the atmosphere of the Holy month of Ramadan as if they are in their own country.

 In a small Austrian village called Berlsleg, the Turkish community always organise a collective Iftar in the mosque, and present many traditional activities related to Ramadan. Moreover, Turkish shops sell goods and food specially for the Holy month of Ramadan like date, Qamar-Eddin, licorice, raisins, and tamarind, nuts, konafa and baklava, biscuits other sweets.

Alaa Moosa Hasan have been almost 10 months live in Tirol district in Alps, he reported to Zaman Al Wasl that Austrian people respect their fasting and consider it as religious freedom. Moreover, he explained that some Austrian people tried to fast for few days as a sign of complimentary, and some families organised Iftar meals for fasting refugees and kept without food till the time of Iftar.

Alaa expressed that despite the long hours of fasting, almost 18 and a half hours, but it is tolerable, unless for smokers, who suffer of long period without smoking.

Alaa have good experience in cooking, he cooks most dishes related to Ramadan and Iftar.
“As soon as Iftar finishes, we start getting ready to Sohoor, and spend the time between both meals in meeting friends and sitting in cafes to watch football matches of the Euro 2016, where big screens are installed for that purpose.

"In regard to Sohoor, we usually have some light food especially the Arabic food we used to eat back home, as many shops in Austria dell Arabic food like thyme, labneh, olive and makdoos", Alaa detailed.
