Syrian refugee says British charities not active in Ramadan

Translation by Rana Abdul

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Pedestrians of London and other British cities were surprised to see traditional transport buses of two flours decorated with phrases on the sides saying,”Subhana Allah” meaning Glory be to Allah in English days before start of Ramadan. It was clear after the idea was part of a campaign starting in British capital to extend to Birmingham, Manchester, and Bradford along with coming of Ramadan.

Islamic Relief Institution organizes the campaign during Ramadan to collect assistance for victims of war in Syria.

However, Syrian refugees’ conditions inside or outside the camp are not very pleasant. There are Ramadan special decoration or appearances that have marked the coming of Ramadan in Syria.

Refugee Modar Abara came two years ago from Homs to live in a camp in Birmingham city. During the two years he said he missed the rituals of Ramadan be it in markets, restaurant, shops or even in Iftar banquets which were famous in the Arab countries and some Asian ones.

Abara indicated there are activates in the Muslim community regarding Ramadan. The Islamic centers and organizations got used to distribute meals on the poor and vulnerable families and sometimes distribute financial assistance and others. Also, mosques in which Tarawih prayer is performed offer water and Tamir Hindi drink with no more than two light meals a week.
He did not feel Ramadan when he was in Birmingham, he confirmed. “Some Syrian refugees who were with him in the camp were fasting silently without letting anyone know,” he indicated.

Abara confirmed the meals delayed to be offered to the fasting people were very bad and insufficient. The meals were like the cooking of soldiers according to him.

He indicated there is a type of pressure by the British Government regarding this and especially after certain events and the general sentiments against Muslims. “there were racist, physical, and verbal abuse for Muslims despite being holders of British citizenship which limit showing their religious rites especially in Ramadan,” he added.

The refugees fear more abuse after a local company commissioned by the government to provide residence for asylum seekers painted the refugee doors with red color in Middlebrow north east of England and what this step poses of possible discriminating secret policy against refugees.

The British Government reserves giving information about the number of refugees in England or their place of residence and sometimes even the camps from which they came from under pretext this reservation policy is to protect the refugees.

England allowed resettlement of 4980 Syrian asylum seekers since war broke out. It is a small number compared with the total number of applications exceeding 25000 applications during 2015.
