Tens of displaced Iraqi families enter Hasaka province: activists

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Kurdish self-administration allowed entrance of tens of displaced Iraqi migrants to al-Houl town in the Hasaka eastern countryside in the past two days after the families were stuck on the borders between Iraq and Syria.

Field activist Malaz al-Yousef told Zaman al-Wasl more than 50 displaced Iraqi families who fled battles in Iraq arrived in the refugee camp in al-Houl adding the Kurdish self-administration did not allow them to cross the Iraqi borders to enter Syria until Hamidi Daham al-Jarba, head of Shumar tribe and ally of Kurdish Democratic Party (PYD) backed them up to enter.

Al-Yousef pointed out the families have been stuck for a week on the Iraqi-Syrian borders because Kurdish self-administration conditioned them to be sponsored by someone to be allowed entry to their controlled areas.

Around 5000 Iraqi refugees live under very bad humanitarian conditions in Syrian al-Houl camp as Doctors without Borders observed during a visit to the camp. MSF diagnosed many disease including scabies, diarrhea, Typhoid, skin rash, Lleishmaniosis, high temperature for children and Rheumatism in addition to other incurable illnesses which require continuous medical care and medications including 3 cases of cancer which did not have chemotherapy since two months according to al-Yousef.

He added, the situation of residents in the camp is worsening during Ramadan. The tents do not prevent burning sun temperature amid shortage of drinking water and food due to absence of any relief organization working in the camp. He indicated the Iraqi refugees cannot return to Iraq after Iraqi authorities opened a refugee camp in Rabiaa town because of security procedures and closing the crossing point.

Governor of Nineveh province in Iraq Nufal al-Sultan demanded from Kurdistan Region Government beginning of June to allow hundreds of Iraqi stuck in Syria to enter Rabiaa town since Local Nineveh Government plans to establish a camp to receive the displaced persons on a land donated by a head of the Arab tribes.

Al-Sultan added, the forces on the Syrian side did not allow them return and that they cannot return to Rabiaa due to Kurdish security forces procedures.

Kurdish self-administration has opened al-Houl camp to receive the migrants on April 21 to host who fled from battles in Iraq and were stuck on the Iraqi-Syrian borders. They arrived to the camps in batches.

Al-Houl camp is situated 5 km west of al-Houl town. It includes 130 compartment and the capacity of the camp can receive 200 families. The camp was established after the American war on Iraq with UN supervision to receive Palestinian and Iraqi refugees who fled the war before it was emptied following Syrian regime bombardment on al-Houl end of 2012 and start of 2013. Later on, it became a residence of families of foreign fighters who joined MSF. (Translation by Rana Abdul)
