Rebels launch major offensive, make gains in Latakia

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrian rebels on Tuesday launched a big offensive on regime forces in coastal Latakia province, taking two hilltops in Jabal al-Akrad, activists said as regime forces and allied militias plan to mobilize more troops in the area.

Rebels have seized Tellat a-Malek and Tellat Rasha after fierce fighting with regime forces and allied militias, according to activists.

Rebels, who launched 'al-Yarmouk Battle' early this week to recapture ground lost months ago in Jabal al-Akrad and Jabal al-Turkman, have seized control of al-Qermil, al-Hakoura and Mzeghla villages.

The Coastal First Division, key rebel group, said more advances to be achieved in coming hours.

In its turn, Regime army has extended its aerial and ground bombing on rebel-held areas.

Pro-regime al-Masdar news site quoted army commander as saying: "Areas seized yesterday by militants are empty and eventually has no strategic significance."

The site added that it is necessary for the regime's highly-trained Desert-Hawks to be re-deployed to northern Latakia frontlines.
