Regime imposed house arrest in Hama countryside: residents

Translation by Rana  Abdul

(Zaman al-Wasl)- Syrian regime forces in Hama have imposed house arrest on residents of the province on Saturday, local sources reported.

Regime checkpoints on roads leading to Idlib province have returned  civilians born in Hama province by force to Hama and bans crossing to Idlib.

Zaman al-Wasl’s correspondent reported from al-Madiq citadel, the last rebel stronghold on Hama road, that all civilians born in Hama were banned by regime checkpoints from crossing to al-Mafiq citadel towards Idlib province including women and children. The correspondent added some civilians are forced to pay more than 2,000,000 SP to be smuggled from agricultural roads to the liberated regions in Syria.

He confirmed that rebels’ checkpoint situated at the end of al-Madiq citadel at the entrance of regime-controlled Salaqbiye city allows civilians to pass. However, they did not witness any civilians born in Hama, Latakia, Tartus, Homs or Damascus passing through the checkpoint. Also, locals in Hama northern countryside complained that regime checkpoints are banning their relatives from coming to visit them.

Activist Mohamed al-Halfawi explained that the regime bans civilians from going to Idlib to recruit young men in its forces through military service or reserve army since many young men are fleeing on fear the regime will recruit them. Another reason is that regime fears these young men will join the rebels in Hama northern countryside or giving information to rebels about regime movement inside of Hama city.

Al-Halfawi added the decision to ban civilians was not released by the regime government, but it is a secret one like the one banning Idlib residents to pass to Latakia and Tartus because regime checkpoints return Idlib born civilians to Hama during their journeys. Young men are transferred to military police to be recruited in the ranks of regime forces.

Civilians take two roads to arrive in Hama. The roads are filled with tens of regime checkpoints which inspect individuals’ names on the computer. The military Fourth Division widely inspects the civilians as well as checkpoints of military police, presidential guards, and thugs. Civilians take an agricultural road passing through the east of Maaret al-Numan and called Abu Dali road or al-Mazout road because fuel-loaded trucks take this road. The second road is called al-Madiq citadel road where regime checkpoints are less from Abu Dali road.

In a related context, civilians in Idlib complain through their journey back and forth to Hama of possible arrest and abuse by regime checkpoints including women. The regime checkpoints also rob civilians of money since each civilian has to bribe the checkpoints to pass. Young men born in Idlib never go to Hama for fear of arrest or taken to regime reserve army as has happened to tens of young men during the past moths.
