Promised Turkish citizenship can be selective: OPINION

Writing by Adnan Abdelrazak; Translation by Rana Abdul

(Zaman Al Wasl)-The Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, announced on Saturday Turkey is determined to give Turkish citizenship to Syrian refugees’ resident in its territories, and that the possibility of giving citizenship to the Syrian refugees who want it is being worked on via a special office formed by the Turkish ministry of interior to that end.

The Turkish President’s word, and the occasion an iftar feast in the city of Kilis where Syrians and Turks were invited and the aim announced, and also according to the President’s words, “Turkey has not changed its stance from the Syrian file, and it is not possible to accept an unjust rule that practices state terrorism and has led to the death of 600 thousand Syrians, and its terrorist practices have exceeded the terrorist practices of the Democratic Union Forces, the terrorist PKK organization’s arm in Syria, and ISIS.”

The news raised questions as soon as we heard it, as the news cannot be separated from the recent changes in the relationships of the region and Turkey, just because Syrians have been in Turkey for 4 years now, and they do not obtain the residence permit except after paying and exhausting themselves, so one sees what has happened and what will happen.

Maybe the first question that comes to mind upon hearing the news, why did the Turkish President say what he said at a dinner that can be considered private, and he did not say it from a podium or as an official announcement, nor did he meet with members of the Syrian coalition, whose salaries he has been paying for the last 9 months, to deliver the news to them?

And can we tie the statement with the sequence of normalizing Turkish Israeli ties and the correction of the Turkish ties with Russia?

And maybe more importantly, will citizenship be granted to the Syrians who want it whose number exceeds 2 million persons in Turkey, or will the action target investors, intellectuals, technocrats, talented youth, and giving citizenship does not extend to refugees, laborers, and small wage earners?

The truth of the matter, that President answered, or tried to during his speech to answer some questions, as he came with the summary, “our last initiative with Russia and Israel aimed at reaching détente in Syria,” attributing the delayed victory of the revolution to the intervention of countries.

And he concluded with some hope, “Syria’s future will be bright, and I know that you have suffered but do not be sad and you will reap the fruits of your struggle, sooner or later,” and the President did not miss the opportunity to ask for forgiveness for any dereliction.

The utmost of the saying, without turning over Turkey’s coal what is the reason for it practices from the red line to the Syrian fighters at the border to not paying the Coalition members’ salaries in the coming month, or praising what the loyal neighbor has offered to 2 million Syrians who have lived conditionally for 4 years in Turkey, and while the conditions are not those of their country at least they are better than the conditions of refugees living in sister Arab countries.

For us to ask based on what we heard from the President on that, if Syria’s future is bright and the Syrian issue on its way to being solved, why is Turkey going to offer those who want it among the Syrians citizenship, for Ankara to contribute as others have contributed in attracting- if we cannot say stealing- Syrian expertise and contributing to a change in the demographic that the murdering inheritor seeks.

Also will facilitating granting Syrians citizenship going to cancel the difficult conditions imposed on Syrians who hold Turkish citizenship of which is an eminent Turkish figure supporting the claimant’s application for citizenship.

Also and also of the questions that do not end and maybe some of them have been said before the terrorist bombing of Ataturk airport by a few days, about giving the permanent blue residence permits to some Syrian “investors, businessmen, and intellectuals” and that the Turkish ministry of labor has raised an appeal to parliament and it was discussed with the social services committee and it may pass the voting.

In conclusion we say, Syrians have felt, or it might be a bit less than a feeling, that the recently witnessed changes in the region will carry surprises for them and it will disperse their feelings on whether the surprises will be to their advantage and the advantage of their revolution, or will it present them as a card on the table to be used for others’ advantage.

As the feeling based on some information and indicators takes residence, with certainty on the ground, they hope that the Turkish neighbor who has offered without doubt a lot, the directions, and all domains for the citizenship that most Syrians dream of carrying, in reality their feelings are of not of country nor of hope to be a flirtation with Iran or Russia or perhaps al-Assad to contribute to the speeding up of the demographic change and useful Syria- and the hope is not a desire or aid of longing, as much as it is mutual interests and destinies- that he not give them painkillers before selling them in political markets.
