Wheat crops sold to private sector, smuggled: official

Translation by Yusra  Ahmed

(Eqtsad)- The amount of wheat handed to regime’s grain centre in recent season is too small compared to the area of planted fields, which highlighted queries about reasons behind deterioration in selling wheat to grain centres and seeds multiplication centres. Sources mentioned that till now, only 40 thousand tonnes were handed to regime’s grain centres, out of expected 2 million tonnes.

Regime’s officials provided many explanations for the drop in selling wheat to regime, but the most important reason was selling it to private sector’s traders, who pay more. The regime pays SYP 100 for a kilogram of wheat, while private traders buy it for SYP 140.

Director of regime’s General Body to develop al-Ghab mentioned that farmers started to store wheat waiting for prices to get higher.

Farmers, even in regime-support areas are reluctant to sell their harvest of wheat to regime, as still a big difference between the planted areas and the handed amount of wheat, as till now it is less than a half.

For example, the Ministry of Agriculture estimated the amount of wheat in Hama by 176 thousand tonnes, while only 58 tonnes were handed to grain centres.

in Hasaka, an amount of 300 thousand tonnes were handed to the regime, out of 800 thousand tonnes.

Regime’s media mentioned that huge amount of wheat, over 160 thousand tonnes, was seized before smuggling it to Lebanon via Tartus. They mentioned that bigger amount of wheat is smuggled without discovering the matter.

On the other hand the opposition has not officially confirmed if they are going to buy wheat from farmers like last year when the Interim Government bought 50 thousand tonnes for the liberated areas.

Opposition’s sources mentioned to Eqtsad that “mess and disorganisation” are the main description of the way of buying and distributing wheat , sometimes local councils and civil bodies buy wheat from charitable funds.

Lawyer Abo al-Khair, an activist in the civil bodies mentioned that although it is difficult to know the exact amount of wheat, but it is far less than people’s needs, due to greediness of farmers and lack of support and charitable fund.
