Huge fire destroys cotton harvest in Hasaka, regime accuses PYD

(Zaman Al Wasl)- A huge fire broke out on Thursday has destroyed thousands of tonnes of cotton harvest in Ghwiran district in the northeastern province of Hasaka, state-run media and activists said.

Local sources reported that a huge fire had broken out in the new stores of cotton harvest in the sport city southern of neighbourhoods of Qhwiran and Layliya at the southern boarders of Hasaka city in Thursday evening. The source mentioned a huge amount of smoke spread in air.

Sources mentioned that the city was highly alerted to put off the fire fearing of reaching to other harvests because big amount of packed bags of cottons in a small area. Sources highlighted that regime tended to keep cotton stores in areas under its control after lost control on stores in Milbia and the Scutcher of Hasaka.

State agency (SANA), the official regime’s news agency, announced that the act was a an act of sabotage caused destroying most of the amount of cotton in stores produced in 2015.

Leadership of National Defense Forces accused who called “insubordinate” of burning the harvest of 5600 tonnes of cotton stored in the square of the sport city in Hasaka, the value was estimated by a one and a half billion Syrian pound, hinting that militants of the Democratic Union party were involved in the fire.

A similar fire affected the cotton harvest in March 27, 2014 when regime’s shelled two bases of (PYD) near the scutcher of Hasaka in Moshairfa neighbourhood north-Western of the city. It was claimed that militants had stolen amount of the harvest from the Scutcher.

Farmers suffer a lot in Hasaka to grow and harvest cotton, the most important problem is the security and high cost of equipments, seeds and compost, beside lack of labour due to leaving the country. The gross production of cotton in Hasaka has dropped from a quarter million tonnes in 2011, to only 30 thousand tonnes this year.

The regime and People’s Protection units (YPG), the military arm of PYD, share control over a wide area, where regime controls dozens of security squares an military bases and dozens of villages in Hasaka and Qamishli, while the Islamic State controls the town of Markada, its last stronghold in the province.
