Ankara expresses doubts over CIA shadow in coup bid

Writing by Ethar Abdulhaq

(Zaman Al Wasl)- A Turkish newspaper confirmed that aircraft of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was harassed by two F16s when Erdogan was returning to Istanbul from a holiday in Marmaris south of Turkey during the coup attempt.

The Daily Sabah Newspaper revealed that American Stratfor center controversially published on its website during the night of the coup the presidential plane path as if directing the coup plotters to target the plane.

On Saturday hours after the coup’s parameters became clear, Erdogan moved from Marmaris where he was vacationing to Ataturk International Airport in Istanbul. After he was promised by military top commander he will be secured landing in the airport. The step was vital in discouraging the coup plotters and encouraging the people and government institutions to confront them.

Startfor Center is considered one of the famous strategic and security studies center not only in America, but also internationally speaking. The center has connections with intelligence apparatuses that makes it able to reach sensitive information. American journalism calls the center The Shadow CIA meaning the other face of CIA especially that the center includes officers and retired employees from the American intelligence.

At the night of the coup, Stratfor Center twitted about Erdogan’s plane course before the center itself lamented the coup considering that its failure will weaken the war against ISIS and will weaken Turkey, too.

The hotel where Erdogan was staying was bombed and underwent storming attempt, but they were late because the president was cautious and left the place immediately. By this, he foiled the coup plotters’ attempt to assassinate him and declare success of their plan.

A Turkish official had previously told Reuters that two F16 jet fighters belonging to the coup harassed the presidential plane as Erdogan was heading to Istanbul. This was confirmed by another Turkish official when he said presidential plane has a problem which he did not reveal.

Zaman al-Wasl went back to Stratfor official page and found that the center twitted in a controversial way few tweets related to the path of Erdogan’s plane.

One of the tweets locate the plane’s location exactly above Marmara Sea. The second confirms Erdogan is about to land in Ataturk. In conjunctions with these tweets and monitoring events during that night, Zaman al-Wasl’s reporter in Istanbul posted two breaking news about intensive flying in the city and breaking the sound barrier.

This suggests two possibilities; the first that coup plotters jets tried to raid Erdogan’s plane over Marmara Sea or before landing depending on Intelligence data which Stratofr publicized. The second possibility that the jets belong to the legitimate government which rushed to stop the jet fighters or helicopters targeting the president.

Zaman al-Wasl reporter observed in the night of the coup that helicopters were mostly flying over Istanbul and that jet fighters only came into sight when Erdogan’s plane neared Istanbul (which was only known to big intelligence apparatuses and Stratfor Center!). That means the jets were trying to do something either hit Erdogan’s plane or protect him.

The conduct of Stratfor Center will increase tension between Ankara and Washington especially that Washington’s response to the failed coup was cold and late. American embassy in Ankara called the coup an uprising and Obama was late in releasing a statement to support the legitimate elected government and following agreement between Turkish officials pioneered by Erdogan and Prime Minister Binali Yilidirm on the involvement on the parallel entity in the failed coup with direct orders from US-based Fethullah Gulen under US protection.

What intensified the situation is that General Secretary of State John Kerry rejected what Ankara declared of Gulen’s involvement indirectly describing the Turkish officials releases as lies in an aggressive tone unfit for diplomacy. Also, he threatened of deteriorating relations before he said Turkey might be excluded from NATO because according to Kerry, it violated laws in its response to coup plotters.

Kerry once again released very controversial statements saying the coup was not planned and executed well as if he regretted its failure.

It seems relations between Ankara and Washington will worsen as Yilidrim stated on Tuesday addressing Washington’s demands of evidence to Gulen involvement saying, “we are ready to present all the evidence, but did you present evidence to us when you demanded Turkey surrendering the involved in 9 September attack.” This is after Yildirim threatened that Turkey will reconsider relations with US if the later did not surrender Gulen.
