Aleppo rebel tunnel bombs killed 38 regime forces: activists

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Nearly 40 Syrian regime soldiers and allied militia fighters were killed when rebels blew up a tunnel under a government position in Aleppo city, activists said Friday.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 38 members of regime forces were killed in the blast on Thursday, which brought down a building used by the regime in Aleppo's Old City.

Fatah Aleppo rebel group claimed responsibility for the bombing, posting a video of the explosion.

The location struck was a police headquarters being used by the powerful Republican Guards, regime's key unit.

The bombing was part of rebels strategy to to unleash major devastation in regime bastions by hand-dug tunnels, in tactics reminiscent of the battlefields of the First World War.

Also in Aleppo, at least 22 civilians had been killed and another 25 injured when regime helicopters and Russian warplanes struck the districts of Al-Fardos, Al-Saleheen and Al-Mashhad, Anadolu agency said Thursday.

Aleppo has been a major battlefield of Syria's war since rebels swept into it in the summer of 2012, and an opposition defeat there would mark their biggest setback in five years of conflict.

Around 300,000 people live in rebel-held eastern Aleppo and for months their lifeline has been a highway leading north from the city known as the Castello Road.

Anas al-Abdah, the head of the opposition Syrian National Coalition called for a suspension of the U.S.-led air campaign against Islamic State in Syria while reports of dozens of civilian deaths from air strikes around the northern city of Manbij are investigated.

Al-Abdah said the strikes should be halted while the incidents were investigated, according to a statement issued late on Wednesday, and warned that the killing of civilians by the U.S.-led air campaign would "prove to be a recruitment tool for terrorist organizations". (With agencies)
