Regime forces set fire in Daraya's agricultural lands to harden siege: residents

(Eqtsad)- Abu Islam leader in one of the groups in Daraya south of Damascus says the area of cultivated land which fell to regime in recent battles is estimated to be 175 acres.

This fighter talks about the issue saying, “we planted in the winter around 75 acres of wheat and barley then we planted 100 acres in this summer of zucchini, tomatoes, cucumber and eggplants. The planted area was in the western and southern side of the city and it became all under regime control.”

Activists in the city had broadcasted footage showing big fires burning barley and wheat crops which regime deliberately started the fire in. One of the footage broadcasted beginning of last June a big fire in wheat crops and some young men rushed to put out the fire while huge black areas appeared beside the fire.

Abu Islam says, “all the cultivated crops went out with the wind. People depended on agriculture and there is no nutrition resource now at all.”

Khalid, 22, works as a fighter on one of the fronts in the city. He said in a phone call with Eqtsad regarding the situation in the city, “the situation is bad. There is no food and nutrition especially that all cultivated crops are either burned or under regime control.”

He added, “one or two persons were able to harvest the wheat crops, but the rest were not able to. The crops were hit 10 days before the time of the harvest.”

Another fighter talked to Eqtsad about the military situation in the city in which battles have not stopped for two months, “there are no antitank weapons or the sweeper which is a huge vehicle used by the regime to remove the barricades and to pave the way for tanks and soldiers during storming operation,” Mohamed says.

He added, “regime’s plan includes capturing all cultivated land to starve people and tighten the grip on points situated in southern front and connecting it with residential complex located in the northern part of the city.”

Mohamed concludes, “this way, the regime will enclose the fighters in the residential buildings.” (Translation by Rana Abdul)
