(Zaman Al Wasl) -Zaman al-Wasl learned from one of the regime officers in Kuweires airport that the Russian military presence in the airport is increasing. The officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity for security reasons, revealed that the last few days witnessed the arrival of extra Russian infantry forces to the airport confirming that they have occupied over half the airport.
He confirmed that the Russian forces located in the airport are air defense forces primarily whereby 3 air defense brigades are based in airport in addition to a radar brigade to reveal air targets, and they are: the missile brigade Sam 5, S-200, Buk 2 missile brigade, S-1 Pantisir missile brigade (Greyhound SA-22), radar brigade, infantry brigade- special forces- to protect the air defense brigade, in addition to a small aviation movement group to welcome Russian aircrafts intending to land at Kuweires airport during emergency situation.
The brigades are based in the airport after gaining it from the regime forces following the breaking of the siege on the airport on November 11 2015 with the help of Russian fighter jets and the Iranian militia.
The brigades’ cores were distributed December 2015 under the supervision of high standing Russian officers who oversaw the selection of buildings for their use in the airport, and distributed the special forces to protect the air defense cars of the three brigades.
The source mentioned that the number of Russian forces currently in the airport does not exceed 1000 members until now, and he described the increased Russian military presence in Kuweires airport as an occupation of the airport as regime officers and the Iran personal present in the airport are prohibited from entering the section controlled by the Russian forces and there is a general discontent among the regime officers about the Russian presence in the airport, “which resembles an occupation.”
The source denied that there is any kind of Russian aircrafts in Kuweires airport until now.
The source likened the presence of the regime forces in Kuweires airport as unwanted guest.
The Russian forces have taken Hmeimem airport in Latakia countryside as a military base since the start of its intervention alongside the al-Assad regime in September 2015, as well as strengthening its locations in other parts of Syria especially the countryside of Homs, Hama, and al-Hassakh.
