About 8000 Afghan fighters gather in Palmyra in support of Assad: sources

Translation by Yusra Ahmed

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Huge number of militias most of them Afghan have arrived Palmyra with help of Iran in order to fight with Assad's regime according to sources.

Well informed sources reported that regime has brought foreign militias mainly Afghan, number estimated between 8000 and 10000, sources do not expected to use them for only protecting the city from the Islamic state.

Logically, the regime can protect the city of Palmyra with much smaller number of fighters against the Islamic State, according to sources, therefore it is expected that regime is planning for a big military attack most likely aiming to advance deep in al-Badiya reaching to Deir Ezzor or Raqqa of both.

Sources detailed that most foreign fighters based in the Branch of al-Badiya in the middle of Palmyra centre at Homs-Palmyra road. Regime has prevented people from passing near the branch to keep the secrecy about the fighters and their movements.

Zaman Al Wasl has obtained new pictures, but with poor quality and not publishable, showing part of the ancient citadel and a mobile connection tower with many barracks around and heavy vehicle and tanks.

Another picture shows a rocket launcher situated at the ancient tombs area. Vehicles were prevented to enter that area before because it was considered one of UNESCO world’s heritage.

Suspicions have raised after situating many barracks and military bases in Palmyra, the unique heritage and ancient city in the world, moreover, no explanation for the silence of UNESCO toward that threat to one of most important monuments on the world.
