Aleppo rebels seize strategic hill, press more advances against Assad army

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Aleppo rebels seized strategic hill and make new advances in al-Ramouseh district west of Aleppo city after a massive tunnel bomb attack left dozens of regime army killed and wounded, local activists said Tuesday.

Tellat Huweiz was not the only gain of rebels major offensive to break siege of the Eastern Aleppo where about 250,000 people suffer suffocating blockade.

Rebels have also taken ground near the western neighborhoods of Aleppo as clashes still underway in the southern and western neighborhoods.

Aleppo Operations Room, an alliance of rebel factions operating in the ciy, said they rebels have also seized ground in al-Ramouseh district west of the city.

Regime air strikes killed at least 15 people on Tuesday in the battleground province, mostly in Atareb town.

Also, rebels shells killed at least 28 civilians in southwestern districts of Aleppo over the last 24 hours, a monitor said late Monday.

Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said those killed "included six children and eight women" in two government-controlled neighborhoods of divided Aleppo.

He said dozens of people were also wounded.

The city's southern edges have been ravaged by intense fighting in recent days as rebels seek to ease a government siege and cut off the regime's own access route into the rest of the northern province.

Once Syria's economic powerhouse, Aleppo city has been roughly divided between government control in the west and rebel control in the east since mid-2012.

In recent weeks, government forces have encircled the east, raising fears of a humanitarian crisis for the estimated 250,000 people now under siege there.

More than 400,000 people have been killed since Syria's conflict erupted in March 2011. (With AFP)
