(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrian resistance launched major offensive this week to break siege of the eastern Aleppo where about 250,000 people are under severe siege.
Syrian regime forces backed by allied militias recaptured territory they lost to rebels in the battleground city on Wednesday in al-Ramouseh area.
The battle for eastern Aleppo, pitting besieged rebels against Syrian, Russian and Iranian-backed forces, has erupted, while the diplomatic effort has no sign of a breakthrough in a U.S.-Russian negotiations for a deal for the situation in Syrian.
There has been a noticeable slowness in the armed opposition’s advance in the third stage of “Great Battle of Aleppo” compared to the achievement in the previous two stages when they had controlled wide area in the Southern part of the city.
On the other hand, commanders of “Jaish al-Fateh” confirm that battles are still ongoing and surprises are going to take place in near future, as the regime’s armory is considered a real obstacle in their advance.
The regime’s armory is situated in the area between al-Hamadaniyah neighbourhood and the area of Al-Ramouseh, covers an area of 2 kilometre, it contains a field for shooting to train officers on heavy artillery weapons located at the western part. There is a Faculty of artillery, which is the largest part of the armory and constitute the striking force, it is located in the middle, added to the faculty of Armament in the southern part. At the North-Eastern part of the armory there is the AIr Technical Faculty where its entrance is adjacent to the entrance of coaches station.
The Faculty of artillery contains huge stores of ammunitions "coarse and fine", missile stores “Konkurs and Malyutka” there are many squares for different purposes like fuel, military vehicles, restaurant, leadership, the main square yard and hardware square where regime forces deploy heavy mortars size 180mm, 130mm, and 122mm besides Vozlika mortar added to mortars size 120mm and 82mm and many heavy machine guns mounted on military vehicles. The college has eight buildings, including artillery leadership and a building for special senior officers of ranks: General, Colonel, lieutenant colonel and pioneer. There is a building for battalions’ commanders, buildings for officers, other for individuals and two blocks for conscription added to a building for the Iranian militias. At the entrance of each building there is a store for weapons. There is a sports city contains a large football field.
The regime forces had in the beginning of the revolution created airfield for helicopters in the North-Western part of the armory area which was confirmed to Zaman Al Wasl by a defected officer who explained that it separated the Faculty of Artillery and the Faculties of armament and the Air Technical.
Al-Ramouseh military Armory is considered the largest defense line and stronghold for the regime, it is the main source of shelling targeted the city of Aleppo and countryside since the beginning of the Syrian revolution. If the armed opposition succeeded in controlling this armory, it would lift the siege over the Eastern eighbourhoods, and would provide safe route reaching to Southern and Western countryside of Aleppo.
According to military experts, if the Syrian opposition managed to control Al-Ramouseh Armory in the third stage of the “Great battle of Aleppo”, the cement factory at the opposite side in which the regime forces are based would fall subsequently. The opposition at the moment controls small parts of the Armory via which it secure access to Eastern neighbourhoods of Aleppo at 5 kilometres distance over the South circular motorway starting from the Project of 1070 flats in al-Hamadaniyah reaching to the coaches Station adjacent to the entrance of the Air Technical Faculty reaching beyond the neighbourhood of Sheikh Saeed overlooking the factory of cement. In the same time, they would discontinue the supply route of regime coming from both airports of Aleppo and Nairab Eastern of Aleppo.
The armed opposition is planning to control the project of 1070 flats, and the village of al-Shorfa, which are close to Faculty of artillery from the West. In order to surround Al-Ramouseh from all sides, the opposition needs to expend control over the village of al-Wadihi near the entrance of Sheikh Saeed neighbourhood after regaining control of the al-Amiriyah village and the area of Jamiyat, Talet al-Mahrokat via sequent win and defeat battles aiming to cover the back of the opposition before attacking the armory from the axis of faculty of Armament, shooting field, Faculty of Artillery launching from the Talet al-Mahrokat, village of al-Shorfa, Talet Mota, and the project of 1070 flats which the regime tried to regain two days ago but the opposition stopped the attack and caused its forces lots of losses.
Military experts think that attacking the regime's armory in Aleppo that consists of 4 military bases could take many weeks due to the Russian air cover which would support the regime’s and the Iranian forces. The commander of Jaish al-Fateh has announced via social media that the third stage has been resumed after two days of calming down, which aims to control the Faculty of Armament, the Faculty of Artillery, the Air Technical Faculty and field of Shooting to release siege imposed over Aleppo neighbourhoods once the opposition forces reaches to neighbourhoods of Sheikh Saeed, al-Sokari and al-Amiriyah.
Aleppo, the Syria's economic powerhouse, has been roughly divided between government control in the west and rebel control in the east since mid-2012.
More than 400,000 people have been killed since Syria's revolution erupted in March 2011.
