SDF takes new neighborhoods from ISIS in Manbij town

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syria Democratic Forces backed by the U.S. air strikes have pressed more advances against the Islamic State in the northern town of Manbij, taking control of  two neighborhoods, Kurdish media outlets reported on Monday.

The battles will be over in few days, SDF commander said after taking control of most neighborhoods of the town.

Small numbers of ISIS militants are still resisting, using civilians as human shields, the alliance says.

An SDF commander, Adnan Abu-Amjad said that between 10,000 and 15,000 civilians were left in areas under IS control, and his forces were working to avoid any harm to civilians.

The US-backed alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters said it had killed 20 ISIS militants after seizing control of al-Tebba and al-Kora al-Ardhiya neighborhoods, also known as the security zone.

Manbij is situated at an intersection of roads just south of the Turkish border.

It has been under ISIS control for more than two years.

In its turn, ISIS said 10 SDF fighters were killed east of Manbij, the group's Amaq news agency said.

The roads in Manbij link the ISIS stronghold of Raqqa to some parts of the Turkish border and other areas under its control in Aleppo province.

The routes have become key to the group's ability to move fighters, weapons and supplies in and out of Syria. (With BBC)
