(Zaman al-Wasl) Syrians’ refusal of the tyranny of the al-Assad family was not going to break or stop, but it gained momentum after the kidnapping of the boys who wrote the phrases against Bashar al-Assad on the walls of one of the schools in Daraa (40th School), promising within months (Jack in the role of the Doctor) the downfall of the farm style regime as other similar regimes fell during the wave of the Arab Spring.
The anti-regime ember in the hearts of a section of Syrians would not be put out, Syrians who despite all the obstacles, oppression, and violence they suffered still took the opportunity to express their refusal of the slavery and violation of the rule, in one way or another, as is revealed in intelligence documents going back to 2008, so around 4 years before the start of the revolution. The telegram listed as immediate and directed from Branch 227 to Branch 271 talks briefly about some “statements of defamation” towards Bashar al-Assad without mentioning the content of the phrases.
The telegram dated 13-10-2008 says the “defaming phrases” were found on one of the walls of the industrial school in the city of Saraqib in Idilb’s countryside.
The head of branch 227 request from branch 271 (the military intelligence branch in Idlib) to look into the telegram content, and to provide branch 227 with the information available about the incident, what procedures have been taken about the issue, and this must be provided as quickly as possible.
One day after the telegram was dispatched, the head of branch 271 responded to branch 227, showing that the defaming statements were found on the high school walls in Saraqib and not on the industrial school walls, and it spoke of “the thieves of national treasures.”
Branch 271’s telegram indicated that similar writings were found on the walls of Abul Basit Bakir school walls talking about the thievery of Rami Makhlouf, Bashar al-Assad’s maternal cousin.
The telegram indicated that the phrases were also written on the walls of the mechanical bakery in Saraqib, and it appears it was more specific and poignant as it questioned, “until when do we remain patient…. Its protector is its thief o al-Assad house and its associates.”
The telegram concluded confirming that the writings were erased and branch 271 “is following up to find the perpetrators.”
Branch 227 is located in the middle of Damascus on 6th May street, popularly known as the politically directed street, in an area with a high concentration of governmental and security buildings, close to the administrative branches 291 and branch 248, and the political administration building.
During the revolution years in particular, the area branch committed many acts of torture resulting in the death of tens of thousands of detainees for the branch’s name to be engraved in the black registry as one of the bloodiest branches alongside branch 215.
Due to its sensitivity, the regime supported the area branch with its most hardened officers, who took high ranking positions in the intelligence apparatus after heading the branch and at their helm Hisham Ikhtiyar who took the position of head of national security office before he was killed during the bombing known as the Cell Crisis (summer 2012), and Rustum Ghazala who occupied the position of head of political security division, who was terminated, paradoxically, by the head of military intelligence Rafiq Shahadeh.
