Prominent civil defense worker killed in Assad strikes on Aleppo: statement

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Khaled Harah, prominent civil defense worker, lost his life on Thursday in regime air strikes on al-Ramouseh district in Aleppo city, the rescuing group said in statement.

Harah was in a rescuing mission with tens of his colleagues as regime warplanes extended its aerial campaign in retaliation of humiliating defeat pushed them to retreat from eastern Aleppo.

Three more SCD workers were wounded in the attack, according to the statement.

The upsurge of intense fighting around Aleppo has killed scores of Syrians in the past weeks.

The United Nations has called for an urgent humanitarian ceasefire in Aleppo, and is pushing for a resumption of peace talks that have failed to end the five-year conflict in which more than 250,000 people have been killed and some 11 million displaced.

Syria Civil Defense, also known as the White Helmets, is a grassroots, volunteer civil defense organization that operates throughout opposition-held areas. It emerged in early 2013, primarily as a response to indiscriminate bombardment of civilian communities by the regime air force. (With agencies)
