Regime, Kurdish militias clash as negotiations fail over Hasaka

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Clashes between the forces of Syrian regime and militants of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) Tuesday in the city centre of Hasaka city following failure to reach to an agreement on controlling the city.

Local sources mentioned that clashes between the Syrian regime with National Defense Forces and military security from one side, and Asayish militias, the security wing of PYD, added to military wings of People’s protection Units (YPG) and Women’s Defense Units (YPJ) at the other side, in al-Nashwa neighbourhood and streets of Qamishli near al-Ahram cinema in the city centre. Sources mentioned that heavy arms and mortars shelling were used resulted in many casualties and death.

Clashes among those forces caused a state of fear among civilians and complete emptiness in the city centre, added to retention of many civilians in conflicted areas without any casualties among them

Media source explained that clashes came as a response to regime’s rejection of PYD’s demands during a 5-hour-meeting yesterday in the province building which aimed to discuss the situation for PYD and its relation to the regime , besides sorting out the detainees matter among both sides.

Sources mentioned that PYD’s representatives have 11 demands, one of them complete resolving of the National Defense Forces and other associated to security bodies.

Tensions started last when between the Syrian regime and Asayish militia after mutual arresting from both sides where dozens were detained.

In the end of last July, tension between the regime forces and Asayish militias took place after killing a commander in regime’s Baath battalion by Asayish militia in the city centre of Hasaka. Moreover other clashes happened in May 18, after disagreement of guarding an examination centre for grade 9 exam, led to death and injuries from both sides beside many civilians.

In Northern countryside, loyalist of Kurdish National Council have organised sit-in in Qamishli, Amoda, Kahtaniyah, Tal-Tamer, Derbasiyah and Malikiya, to protest against arresting campaign of armed people belonged to PYD again its leaders and members.

In the Southern countryside two road side blasts bear the factory of al-Shadadi gas, while clashes between fighters of PYD and other armed people took place.

Many forces share controlling Hasaka province: People Protection Units (YPG), the armed wing of PYD which control the widest area of the province, while the Syrian regime control the security areas and military bases and dozens of villages around Hasaka and Qamishli, while the Islamic State controls only the town of Markada, its last stronghold.
