(Zaman Al Wasl)- After more than a week of clashes between YPG, the armed wing of Kurdish Democratic union Party (PYD) and Syrian regime, the Kurdish forces almost completely controlled Hasaka city on Tuesday after the ceasefire truce that strengthened the Kurds' grip on the city.
The battle over Hasaka was the most violent between the two Yesterday’s allies in five years of Syrian war, when the Syrian regime, for the first time, used air force against the PYD forces, the U.S.-backed Kurdish forces.
The ceasefire demanded the Syrian regime leaving the city of Hasaka after losing control over many neighbourhoods, while only kept controlling few buildings known as the “security quarter”, while the rest of the city became under Kurdish control.
The conflict between the Syrian regime and YPG preceded with mutual arrest campaigns from both sides for a week. The PYD aimed from the clash to force the regime to stop arming Arabs in Hasaka and to resolve the Arabs militias supported by the regime. Moreover, it aimed to strict the regime’s existence to security quart in order to benefit of its authority till the endorsement and announcement of the Federal System in Syria.
Based on the fear of arming Arabs in Hasaka, the Kurdish party surrounded the Southern countryside of Qamishli, the biggest gathering of Arab in the province, beside disarming people in the area.
Announcing the federation and self Administration by PYD were not approved by the Syrian opposition, that pushed PYD to rely on regime to support its plans especially it still has the international recognition and supported by Russia and China in the Security Council.
PYD, the US-backed Kurdish forces, would not start such radical step without support and permission from the United States, especially it had encouraged PYD to detach from the Syrian regime to support it. Moreover, the US requested the Syrian opposition High Negotiation Committee to communicate and negotiate with Muslim Saleh’s party.
If the PYD has authorisation from the Syrian opposition and supported by the US, it would think of detaching from the Syrian regime and it would be the biggest winner, especially after managing to control wide areas in North of Syria, especially rich land and sources of water like Furat an Khabour rivers. Added to oil fields in Rmilan and Shadadi, which enables it to announce the Kurdish Territory in the north of Syria without any objection by the regime or the opposition.
The battle of Hasaka has re-introduced the Syrian Peshmerga, the military wing of Kurdish National Council, therefore, US would work on activating Dohuk agreement between the Kurdish forces that reached to in October 2014, in which the Kurdish parties agreed to set aside their long-standing differences and cooperate militarily and politically to face the Islamic State, in the presence of Massoud Barzani, the Kurdistan Region’s president, who sponsored days of negotiations in Dohuk, the deal was agreed between the Democratic Union Party (PYD) and other parties that are closer to the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). The meeting was initiated after a meeting between the Kurdish politician Abdul-Hakim Bashar with the American General John Allen, responsible for the Syrian file militarily, who expressed his country’s support to Kurds in their both sides “Ocalan and Barzani” if they reached to an agreement an detach from the Syrian regime.
However, Russian strong existence in Syria would be obstacles for the PYD’s attempts to announce complete detachment from the regime, as Russian Forces in Syria could prevent the US from interfering to protect PYD’s military bases in Hasaka, that recruit young men by force. In the end, PYD’s attempts to keep holding the stick from the middle would be no longer effective, as it would need to decide which side should take.
