Organised gangs, supported by security forces steal vehicles in Tartus

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Fear has been sparked among civilians of the coastal city of Tartus due to widespread of gangs steal vehicles. The criminal police arrested many members of the gangs, but they were released due to orders from prominent figures.

The criminal police announced Sunday August 21, that it managed to recognise a gang consists of many members and two of them were arrested, while the majority are still free.

One of the criminals confessed that he planed to steal a car with another member in the industrial area in Tartus, then they hid it in a village in the countryside of Mesiaf, then they changed its colour and characteristics to sell it in al-Qardaha, the hometown of Bashar al-Assad.

Many people reported missing their cars while parking in roads in front their houses, and the responsible bodies were not able to find them or the thieves, and car had not been returned.

On the other hand, most cases of public car theft happened at gunpoint, moreover, most arrested thieves were armed with guns given to them by the security forces, and they were released by orders from officers in the security of high ranks, or by court orders under pressure.

A security source talked at condition of anonymity reported that most thieves are affiliated to one of the security branches and they sell cars to groups to turn then into car bombs and send them to areas under the opposition’s control. Or they are sent to to regime’s controlled areas for security reasons, or to be used for arresting or assassinating people beside using them in transporting looted furniture’s from displaced people houses.
