4 years since arrest, Surgeon Hayel Hamid still missing

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrian security forces are still detaining the Palestinian Surgeon Dr. Hayel Hamid for the fourth year after arresting him in his clinic in Yarmouk camp for Palestinian Refugees southern of Damascus, and refuse to reveal information about his fate.

A statement issued by the Working Group for Palestinians in Syria mentioned that Dr. Hayel, born in the village of Dalana in Palestine 1948, had insisted on returning to his clinic in Yarmouk camp to treat wounded civilians, but the regime’s security arrested him in August 13, 2012, under accusation of treating terrorists, since then no information available about his fate or even place of detention.

The statement mentioned that many medical staff and institutions like hospitals and clinics were targeted by the regime’s shelling and severely damaged or destroyed, moreover, significant number of medical staff were arrested or even killed.
The working group’s statement warned of hiding information about the fate and numbers of Palestinian detainees in regime’s prisons, estimating the number of 1100 detainees, 449 of them were killed under torture.

Hamid, a Palestinian Surgeon and consultant of General Surgery and endoscopy, besides tumour surgery. He worked in the UK’s hospitals, a member of of the British Association of General Surgery, he was a lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine in Damascus University and the head of the Surgery Department on al-Assad Hospital in Damascus.
