(Zaman Al Wasl)- “Al-Amal humanitarian Team” in Eastern Ghouta brings hope for amputees especially children and women.

“the idea of the initiative was born due to increasing in attacks at the Eastern Ghouta, and the widespread of cluster bombs causing many amputation and injuries, Razan Khobiya, the coordinator of the initiative said to Zaman al-Wasl.

The initiative works on facilitation connection between victims and amputees of women and children’s families with the charitable bodies and relief agency to help them in having prostheses.

Masa, a-3-year-old girl was at the centre of prostheses having some medical examinations, she was innocently playing with her toy, not realizing her medical condition, as she might think that was the normal situation, because her leg was amputated when she was 9 months old due to a bomb explode while her mother was carrying her.

According to Razan that the idea had come to her mind after amputating her brother’s leg, and she witnessed how bad the emotional effect were on him. Then she met many children lost their limbs, one of them Yaser, who had both his legs amputated, he was in shock and kept shouting “bring me my legs back”
After visiting Yaser in his home, she noticed how devastated he was, which had deepened her conviction that children have the priority in finding them suitable prosthesis.

In the first stage of the initiative, 5 children, 3 women and 5 adults had prosthesis fixed in Douma city, but according tp Razan, there are still many cases in the Eastern Countryside of Damascus like Saqba and hamoriyah.

After that Razan started looking for children with amputation, she was surprise from the high number of affected children who did not find anyone to support them. Then the initiative launched with few volunteers and self-finance aiming to support children emotionally and bring hope to them by giving them the medical and emotional care.

The initiative coordinator told Zaman Al Wasl a case of a child who was very stressed after the death of his father and brother, he was lock himself in a room to avoid being seen by his friends.

“I was happy when I saw his beautiful smile, and I felt his happiness when he told me that was the first time he ride a car”, Razan detailed.

Razan mentioned that Council of Damascus Countryside province in Eastern Ghouta has adopted the initiative and supported it by providing a van to transport children to the treatment centres and returning them to their houses. She thanks Bilal, the Executive manager of the project who used to carry children from their houses to the van and vice versa. Added to the role of “Farha” project of Prosthesis in Eastern Ghouta in helping the initiative to come to light and succeed.
