Kurdish National Council ends week-long hunger strike in Hasaka

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Kurdish National Council announced on Sunday end of hunger strike organized by municipalities of the council during the last week in towns and cities in northern Hasaka in protest of Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) arrest of supporters and leaders of the national council.

Mohamed Farhan, member of the General Coordination of Kurdish Reform-Syria (a body in the Kurdish National Council), said that ending the hunger strike came on demands from detainees’ families, pointing out that does not mean the end of peaceful protest to release political detainees from PYD’s prisons.

He told Zaman al-Wasl, the hunger strike started by the eastern local council in Qamishli and the council decided to join with municipalities in a hunger strike for 3 days starting from last Friday until Sunday, adding that hunger strikers’ number in eastern and western Hasaka reached 60 persons and some persons were affected due to the strike.

Farhan indicated there is no promise from PYD until the moment of releasing political detainees, members of the Kurdish National Council and council’s party leaderships.

Leader in Kurdistan Democratic Party Omar Ismail confirmed the strike ended in all local councils’ subordinate to the Kurdish National Council which was declared in a press conference in Qamishli and another in al-Malkiye and the rest of the areas.

Omar Ismail told Zaman al-Wasl, “I only ask this, when did a funeral for a Peshmerga fighter who died by an ISIS bullet become a crime against humanity that PYD arrests great fighters like Mohamed Ismail and Nashaat Zaza and Nafi Abdullah and others for their active participation in the funeral of Peshmerga member Habibi Qadri?”

PYD had arrested on 15 August the Secretary of the Political Office of Kurdistan Democratic Party-Syria Mohamed Ismail and the Political Office member Nashaat Zaza and Central Committee members Abdul Kareem Haji and others on the Qamishli-Rmayalan road during their participation in funeral for the Peshmerga fighter Habibi Qadri from Si Malka border cross point with Iraq.
