Tension escalates between PYD and local residents on Iraqi border

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Asayish militia, the armed wing of Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD), killed a young man on Monday in a village near the Iraqi-Syrian borders in Hasaka countryside while a PYD armed group arrested several young men who were participating in a protest against the party in Tal Hamis and kidnapped a journalist in Malkiye.

Activist Ismail Sharif said that Asayish killed young man Hani Khanjar (19) after storming Bani Shakfti village on Monday clarifying Hani was shot by the storming force and he died after getting transport to Malkiye hospital.

The Kurdish activist told Zaman al-Wasl there was tension in the village during the past days due to Asayish arrests of young men in the village.

Sabah Mirani, Ark program manager in Kurdish Zakros TV told Zaman al-Wasl that Ismail Ali the correspondent of the TV was kidnapped on Sunday by a PYD armed group from al-Malkiye after the journalist covered the activity of the Kurdish National Council hunger strike to support the detainees at PYD prisons.

Mirani added, “we hold PYD fully responsible and any assault on our journalist is an assault on free press and democracy,” pointing out that PYD armed men threatened Ali several times and attacked him on November 19 2015 during his coverage of a protest for the Kurdish National Council in al-Malkiye and his equipment were confiscated.

On his part, activist Ahmad al-Ali from Hasaka Media Center said that tens of families in Tal Hamis including women and children participated in a protest in al-Hanwah al-Kabira village to protest PYD cutting power and electricity off 13 villages. The families considered the act an act of pure discrimination since PYD was giving power to the villages supporting it.

The activist confirmed that PYD arrested more than 5 protesters while suppressing the protest and there is no information about them so far.

PYD announced self-administration beginning of 2014 which has its own security and military apparatuses and institutions in 3 cantons Efrin, Ayn al-Arab and al-Jazira (north of Hasaka). Other areas were taken north of Raqqa, Aleppo, and south of Hasaka and the regions were not bombed by the Syrian regime.
