Palestinian hunger striker freed from Israeli custody

Palestinian hunger striker Malek al-Qadi was released from the Israeli custody on Saturday, according to a local Palestinian NGO.

“Al-Qadi was received by Palestinian medics in awake of his release from Israeli hospital,” the Palestinian Red Crescent Society said in a statement.

"He was immediately transferred to Arab Consultative Hospital in the West Bank city of Ramallah, where he will complete his treatment,” it added

Last week, al-Qadi, 19, ended his 69-day hunger strike after reaching an agreement with the Israeli authorities for his release.

“Today I will meet my mother, my family and my friends as a free man,” al-Qadi said following his release.

Under Israel's administrative detention policy, prisoners can be held for up to one year without charge or trial.

According to official Palestinian figures, over 7,000 Palestinians are currently languishing in Israeli prisons, roughly 700 of whom are being held in administrative detention.
