The study demonstrated that the number of residents present in regime controlled areas reached 15,000 whereas the number of residents present in Islamic State controlled areas reached 23,000, and 25,000 lived in opposition held areas.

In addition, 17000 people form Palmyra live in the border camps. The statistics explained the distribution of Syrian refugees from Palmyra city outside of Syria. The larger percentage is present in Turkey with an average of 20,000, in Europe there are 5,000, in the Arab states 4000, and around 1000 thousand people remain in the city.

On its Facebook page, the center indicated that in the last statistical study of Palmyra’s population they numbered 85 thousand. Since the start of the revolution, around 25 thousand persons from other cities such as Homs, Damascus suburb, and the villages of Deir Ez Zor of Palmyrian origins migrated back to the city. The total number of city residents in the period prior to Islamic State forces entering the city ranged between 105 and 110 thousand.

The city was subject to numerous military campaigns by the al-Assad regime before Islamic State forces entered it. It witnessed more than one wave of migration which began under al-Assad’s control and continued after ISIS forces entered the city. The migration escalated after the severe bombardment perpetrated by the Assad and the Russian forces on the archeological city under the pretense of expelling ISIS.
