(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrian regime forces launched new offensive on the western suburbs of the capital, saying it wants to clear rebel pockets in area close to an Alawite-dominated district, activist said Tuesday.
The local rebels of Qudsaya and al-Hama clashed with regime ground troops as they press to seize the strategic suburbs, 7 km (5 miles) west of Damascus.
Pro-regime social media pages said regime has encircled the area, making it in complete isolation.
Bashar al-Assad's forces have brutally pounded the rebel-held areas that surrounding Damascus and have also reached fragile truces in other ares to make its 'safe zone'.
CLASHES RENWED IN LATAKIA
Clashes have renewed between regime forces and rebels in mountainous Latakia province since Monday morning, local monitor group said, days after calm followed U.S.-Russian truce.
Latakia Media Network said both sides had exchanged shelling on their territories in Jabal al-Akrad and Jabal Turkman areas.
The strategic hilltops have witnessed several skirmishes for months, and gains and losses reported for each side.
Regime artillery hit al-Kabbana and al-Najiya villages on Monday, rebels, in return, have pounded regime stronghold in Tallat al-Baida near Kensaba town.
