Syriac language imposed in PYD-controlled Hasaka schools


(Zaman Al Wasl)- The Kurdish self Administration has forced teaching in Syriac language as well as Kurdish an Arabic, for grades 1-3 in schools of Hasaka under the Kurdish administration control, amid fear of people for not recognising the teaching their children received in areas out of the Syrian regime’s control.

Activist Mahmood al-Ahmad reported that Democratic Union Party (PYD) has announce their plan to teach Syriac language in schools of Hasaka under their control for grads 1,2 and 3 in the beginning of academic year 2016-2017, then they would introduce the Syriac language to other grades later.

Al-Ahmad mentioned that the Kurdish administration has announced for recruiting 50 Syriac language teachers of both genders, who were trained in Orhi institute, to distribute them to schools under their control in the city of Rmilan, Qamishli, Ras al-Ain Malikiyah and Qahtaniyah.

Al-Ahmad reported that a demonstration was organised in front of the Education complex in Qamishli on Tuesday, demanding finding a solution for their children's future and granted them recognised certificates. As the education complex did not recognised the certificates of grade-6 granted from schools teaching the Kurdish language, and they were not accepted in the preparatory stage.

The regime’s Directorate of Education in Hasaka, decided the install pre-built rooms in schools’ squares in areas under its control I order to accommodate students.

The activist mentioned that fighters of PYD had handed the University of al-Furat to regime, according to an agreement brokered by Russia between them and regime, which indicated that PYD militias to withdraw from the university.

A Syriac source talked on condition of anonymity reported that a verbal agreement between the PYD and private Syriac and Armenian schools in Hasaka, that demanded the school to refuse admitting Kurdish students in order to allow them to teach the regime curriculum, the same one that Arab student had been taught since last year.
Al-Ahmad mentioned that most political parties and church bodies do not accept the step of teaching Syriac language, except the Syriac Union party, that is an ally to PYD within the Self Administration.

Al-Ali added that schools in southern Hasaka have started the academic year without any preparation, even no committee attended to evaluate the damage. Moreover, the Kurdish self Administration asked old teachers to teach the new curriculum although they did not have any experience or training. Moreover, children find difficulties in learning in Kurdish language as the area is of Arab majority.

Teaching process is being used by the two fighting forces in Hasaka, PYD and regime, to manipulate children's thoughts and attitudes and direct them toward their principles.
