(Eqtsad)- The absence of medical monitoring and inspection in liberated areas northern of Syria, adding the huge reduction in number of medical staff due to displacement and traveling abroad, have pushed many of inexpert people to work in herbal treatment and what so called “alternative medicine”.
Moreover, people turned out to used these treatments, which increase diseases and sometimes death.
Dr, Ahmed al-Jirk, head of Surgery department in the National Hospital of Mo'arat explained to Eqtsad that herbal treatment is complicated and needs wide experience, however, practicing it by inexpert could harm patients, by either giving them unsuitable dose of the effective medical component of the herb, or by delaying treatment, which miss the chance of catching diseases during the treatable stage. For example some cancers needs diagnoses and treatment before spreading to surrounding tissue and spread to other part of the body.
The surgeon explained that he treat two to three case monthly with complication resulted from herbal treatment , some of them have cases of advanced cancer resulted from delaying diagnosis and treatment due to relying of herbs. Some cases of arthritis or psoriasis with deep irritation were seen as well.
in regard to reasons behind spreading of this phenomena, Dr. al-Jirk explained that low level of education and traditional and social habits play role in that, added to lack of inspection and supervision, which facilitated practicing this profession by inexpert and nescient.
In the end, Dr. al-Jirk advised to the need for educating people about herbal medicine starting with schools and other institutions which deal with the youth, added to discussing the matter in social media.
Dr. Ahmed Dadoush, Dermatologist explained that herbal treatment is spread for years, but these days it has dangerously spread due to practicing it by inexpert and unaware of the benefits and concentration of medical components besides the side effects of herbs. Dr. Dadoush explained that herbal treatment harm some medical conditions like treating Leishmania with herbs could lead to deepening the scar and deformation of skin.
Pharmacist Fawaz al-Hamoud explained that practicing herbal Medicine has been invaded by inexpert and immoral practitioners who know few information and rely on old references and books.
al-Hamoud mentioned that herbal treatment is beneficial as long as it is used by educated and experienced practitioners, as most medication are extracted from plants, but the problem lurks in the dose and its suitability for the age, gender, weight and chronic disease stage.
