Damascus: Palestinian Khan al-Sheeh camp under siege, bombing

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Tens of Khan al-Sheeh camp locals in the Western Ghouta suburbs protested the difficult humanitarian conditions they suffer in the light of the enforced siege and almost daily targeting of the camp by regime forces and Russian warplanes using all kinds of weapons including Napalm, Phosphorus and cluster bombs.

The protesters who gathered in front of Family Health Center in the camp on Tuesday carried banners describing the siege which they have suffered from for years. One banner said, “I want bread” another “our camp empty from weapon and armed men”.

Other statements described the Russian assault on the camp saying, “The terrorist Nazism killing the children of Syria and Palestine”. Other banners demanded stop of bombings, snipers and fighting forced displacement calling for UNRWA to rescue and employ Palestinian refugees and to secure protection for them in the camp.

The protesters sent a memo to UN demanding stop of bombing on the camp and secure a safe passage and bread for the families.

The memo called for UNRWA to open schools after the unjustified suspension and secure all services for besieged families in the camp.

Khan al-Sheeh Media Office member activist Imad al-Masalmani indicated that regime campaign on the surrounding areas of the camp in the start of October had dangerous reflections on Khan al-Sheeh. The camp suffers a suffocating siege for the 11th day in a row and suffers lack from food items, fuel and medications. Also, schools closed due to targeting UNRWA schools with artillery which injured a teacher and several children.

Al-Masalmani expressed fears that the camp will turn into a worse version of al-Yarmouk Camp if the siege is not lifted.

Activist Taim al-Shami reported aspects of besieged people suffering in the camp which hosts thousands of families and forcibly displaced people from Damascus countryside saying the camp lacks any means of life because of siege and closed checkpoints.

He confirmed that camp for Palestinian refugees’ hosts 20000 civilians; 12000 Palestinians and 8000 forcibly displaced people from western Ghouta.

He pointed out that the daily bombing by Russian warplanes exhausted the camp. The Russian warplanes launched 19 air strikes using missiles containing cluster bombs whereas 4 raids used Phosphorus bombs.

The regime warplanes dropped 35 explosive missiles carrying Napalm material in addition to 75 artillery bombs and Grad missile. Hundreds of bombs targeted the neighboring farms.

5 civilians, including children, have been killed and more than 35 injured by the bombings in the past few days and the bombing damaged the field hospital which is now out of service.
