(Zaman Al Wasl)- Well-informed sources said more than 24 Russian warplanes, Sukhoi-24 and Sukhoi-34, have arrived the coastal Hmeymim airbase, as Moscow plans to step up its aerial campaign against the Syrian people.
Sources detailed that warplanes are arriving consecutively as 4 planes each stage flying over Iraq and Iran.
This news followed the decision signed by Vladimir Butin in regard to stationing Russian forces inside Syria indefinitely. Added to the tension between Russia and the Western country and US government in regard to the Syrian Crisis.
The count of Russian warplanes in Syria would raise to 74 one when the 24 plane arrived. All are advanced Sukhoi (SU24, SU30, SU34, SU35), which are able to perform 400 air raids daily and the already equipped plane able to perform 6 raid in war time.
The Russian military intervention in Syria began in September 2015 after an official request by the Syrian regime for military help against rebels. The intervention initially consisted of air strikes targeting the north-western Syria, against the Syrian armed opposition.
Russia′s air force took active part in the Syrian regime’s offensive against Aleppo that began in the end of September 2016. Subsequently, the U.S. government in early October suspending talks on Syria with Russia. The U.S. government publicly accused Russia of ″flagrant violations of international law″ in Syria and urged investigation of war crimes.
On 15 October 2016, the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov, accompamied by battle-cruiser Pyotr Velikiy and other warships and support vessels, set sail from Kola Bay to be deployed to the Mediterranean in support of Russian forces operating in Syria.
Russian forces may remain in Syria indefinitely, the Kremlin indicated in the end of September 2016.
It is estimated that Russian military campaign has killed almost 4000 civilians since it began a year ago.
The Kremlin initially ruled out sending ground troops, however, evidence suggests special forces, artillery, and tank units have also been deployed and taken part in action in Syria. Russia has not publicised the number of troops it has deployed to Syria
