Russia deploys new ground troops in Palmyra city: source


(Zaman Al Wasl)- A well-informed source in Homs told Zaman al-Wasl that big Russian ground forces has been positioned east of Homs province few days ago.

The source confirmed that the Russian forces mainly centralized in a ground military base in the archaeological area and touristic hotels and in several areas around Palmyra.

Regime forces captured Palmyra after ISIS withdrawal from the city located north east of Damascus in around 200 km end of last March. The regime captured the city after a military operation in which Russian special forces and air force participated widely.

The source clarified that base in which the Russian centralized was a Russian engineering location before the Russian made bigger to form a permanent base for them in case of any confrontation with outside force that might come close to Russian control area in Palmyra.

According to the source, the Russian forces prepared engineering squares for jet fighters and transport fighters based in al-Shuayrat and Ti-four airports to land in case of emergency intervention via special forces assigned to the area.

The source revealed the Russian forces in Palmyra are more than 1000 personnel distributed on different battalions, confirming Russia sent new tanks of T-90 types and soldiers transportation vehicles to Palmyra.

The base located in Palmyra is the first ground base in the strategic depth of Syria for the Russians which indicates the Russians plan to stay for a long period of time as Kremlin announced.
