Germany President tries his skills in making Syrian Tabola

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Modar Sheikh Ahmed, a Syrian young man, a refugee in Germany, was surprised to see the German President attending the cooking show he was doing. 

Madar is fond with cooking, he used his talent in this field and founded “Cooking outside the box”, a project started as an attempt to introduce Syrian cuisine to Germans, and ended up in as way of integration between Germans and Syrians. 

“I wanted from the project of Remote Kitchen and from the title to introduce our food to Germans and to point that cooking is not a profession for making food only, it is not just for filling stomach, it can have more social and emotional background and effect, for that reason I used cooking to teaching cooking to reduce the distance between Syrians and Germans”, Modar explained.

He added that in the end of each cooking lesson, attendees, whatever their Nationalities were, danced the traditional Syrian "Dabka" on the Syrian songs and music. 



He mentioned that one of the goals of the project is finding jobs opportunity for Syrian refugees, in this regard, the Bank of Germany has sponsored the project and its agents cooperate with it to empower refugees and find them jobs suitable to their skills and studies.

The German President Joachim Gauck attended one of the project activities and asked the team of "Cooking Outside the Box" to teach him how to prepare “Tabola”, the kind of Salad well known in Levant countries. He wanted to show people the kind of integration they have in Germany, and to encourage such activities.


Modar was graduated from University in Arabic Literature in Aleppo University, but soon troubles started in 2013, he left the country heading to Europe aiming to arrive Sweden, but he ended up in Germany. 

He and his team won the prize for best chef in Berlin completion 2015.
